Rethinking instruction

With the increase of technology and the changing student we experience, does instruction and our thoughts about what it looks like need to change? YouTube is one of the most popular sites on the Internet and relies on short, to the point videos. Most of society relies on, short to the point information. Does education need to adjust as well? I know this may upset some, but is the term paper dead, to be replaced by a short video about students learned? Is project based learning, students taking all of their classes at home, and/or something like flipped classrooms the future? Could we see the end of brick and mortar in the very near future?

  1. Interesting points. Have you taken Dalton's Designing Multimedia course yet? He discusses what the "term paper of the future" may look like...

    1. I have taken his class but cannot remember exactly what he said. I have thought that for some time we need to change. I think too many people are set in traditional ways when it comes to education. I think this mentality is causing some (not all) of our issues in education.

    2. I think education does need to change, but not in an all or nothing way. For some students writing a term paper is appropriate, for others a video on what they learned is appropriate, while for others a verbal assessment works best. If we give the students "choice" that would reflect real life in a meaningful way. There will always be some students who need a brick and mortar classroom and some students who can use any and all methods. Truly individualizing education is the ideal I hope for.
